The impact of the crash ejected Switzer Jr. and Switzer III from the car, and they landed on the roadway. The victims sustained severe injuries that claimed their lives. The ISP said that the crash led to the closure of the right traffic lane at about midnight to allow investigators to gather evidence and clear the scene. They reopened it at about 5 a.m.

Motor vehicle crashes are not uncommon in Illinois, and they are one of the leading causes of death in the state and the United States. An accident can be a solo car crash or a collision involving two vehicles or more.

They are usually the resultant effect of negligence or factors beyond the control of the motorist. The two cover impairment of drugs or alcohol, which leads to speeding and reckless driving, manufacturer or mechanical defects, and an underlying medical condition.
