A Tuesday, June 9th, accident report revealed that a construction worker lost his life after getting hit by a car in Gridley, Illinois. The McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder said in a press release that the victim is a 59-year-old male from Bloomington and will release his name after notifying his next-of-kin.

The Illinois State Police named Abuelsood Juma, 58, of Peoria, as the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident. The investigators said that the victim was directing traffic in a work zone when the man struck him at about 8:51 a.m. near the intersection of US Route 24 and Ford Street.

The medics took the construction worker to the emergency room at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, where he passed away at 9:57 a.m. Yoder said they would perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The ISP issued Juma tickets for failure to yield to a construction worker and speeding.

The investigation is ongoing with the state police and the coroner’s office collaborating. They will release an update when they have more information.

Accidents occur at road construction sites when drivers and workers fail to follow the safety rules. They include correctly maintaining traffic, creating separate work areas, wearing proper safety equipment, and avoiding blind spots. Construction workers should be aware of their surroundings, have a competent person on hand, have a site safety plan, and start each workday with a team safety meeting.
