On-site investigations revealed Esfandiar Nikbakhshtali was driving a 200 Dodge Caravan along Curtner Avenue at Canoas Gardens Avenue. At the same time, a 64-year-old woman was walking on the westbound lanes of the same route. For reasons still under investigation, the motorist failed to swerve to avoid a collision and struck the woman. The woman ended up sprawled on the roadway, with major injuries.
Paramedics transported her to an area hospital for urgent medical aid. Sadly, the woman succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital, the accident reports affirmed. The identity of the female victim remains withheld pending notification of her family members.
The motorist fled the scene after the accident, but officers eventually apprehended him in Santa Clara. Deputies detained the suspect on suspicion of hit-and-run, DUI, and being in possession of the drug paraphernalia.
