Investigators gathered that a wrong-way motorist caused the crash after crossing the center line and striking the couple’s vehicle. Prior to the collision, the Christians were traveling on Highway 36, directly in front of a second car, which also was involved in the accident. Police said an oppositely-bound vehicle on the other side of the highway crossed into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons, resulting in the crash.
The impact of the collision forced the Christian’s vehicle to roll over and crash on the roadway, blocking off traffic. The car traveling behind them collided with the wrecked vehicle almost at once.
Medical personnel accompanying the GSP tried to save the Newton County couple, but they gave in to their fatal injuries at the scene. The reports did not disclose information about the wrong-way motorist, or the occupants of the other vehicle.
An investigation into the traffic wreck is ongoing.
