Investigations conducted at the site suggested the fatal victim, identified as 70-year-old Linda Smythe, was riding a bicycle near the intersection. An approaching vehicle suddenly encountered the cyclist, knocking her and her bike to the ground. The woman suffered fatal injuries as a result.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after and found Smythe unconscious. The Orange County Coroner’s Office pronounced her dead at the scene, from critical injuries sustained in the crash.

Police said the operator of the vehicle stayed at the crash site until lawmen arrived. He cooperated during the interrogation, without incident. Authorities did not disclose his name to the public.

The reports failed to ascertain whether impairment by drugs or alcohol played a role in the fatal traffic wreck. Further detail regarding the fatal encounter is pending.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing, headed by the CHP.

It is advisable for people involved in bicycle accidents, or their families to seek legal counsel from an experienced bicycle accident attorney.
