The Alameda County Coroner’s Office said they lived in Oakland.

The accident happened on westbound I-580 a little after 11:30 a.m.

The children were in a vehicle driven by a 42-year-old woman who was said to be their mother. She suffered serious injuries while the other boy’s injuries were described as moderate.

The woman reportedly lost control of her car and crashed into a parked Ford F-250. A minivan then hit the Honda.

The Ford was a rental being used by CalTrans for maintenance work. However, the two workers were outside the vehicle when the crash occurred.

Only the family in the Honda suffered injuries.

Passersby stopped at the scene to try to help the children.

One of them, Matthew Aberi, said he and a CalTrans employee tried to open the door and get the children out.

The two victims and the third child were students of KIPP Bridge Academy in West Oakland.

Principal John Peterson said the family belonged to the KIPP Bridge community for years and Candace and Elijah were kind, thoughtful students who loved to learn.

He said they were deeply loved by their peers and staff alike and would be missed.

The westbound lanes of I-580 were closed for much of the afternoon as a result of the crash, accident reports state.
