Investigators said that for some reason, the man came out of his vehicle, and at about 9:22 p.m., an oncoming car struck him down. The latter was driven by a man identified as a 38-year-old Suisun resident. Mazac sustained severe wounds that claimed his life at the scene.

The CHP has not released additional details on the crash or if the Suisun man would get cited. The investigation is ongoing, and they will provide an update at a later time.

Data from the California Office of Traffic Safety showed that 893 pedestrians died on the state’s roadways in 2018, a 26% increase from 2014. The accident reports also showed that about 14 000 people were injured, and nearly 7, 500 have died between 2009 and 2018.

California pedestrian fatality rate is 25% higher than the national average, and no state in the US has more pedestrian deaths on its roadways. OTS advise road users to work together to reduce the death rate by protecting themselves and others around them.
