Police officers with the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, California, on Wednesday, April 15th, apprehended a woman for elder abuse, among other crimes. Stacey Ellak, 43, of Jamestown, was arrested after the police caught her with a stolen check.

The sheriff’s office said that at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a call came in about a woman trying to use a stolen check at a Price Co. Food store. Officers were dispatched to the area, and when they arrived, they found Ellak leaving a CVS pharmacy.

The police said that the suspect ran when she saw the officers, but they caught her after a brief chase. A search of her belongings uncovered methamphetamine pills, burglary tools, and personal identification information belonging to different people.

The officers found several stolen checks and debit cards, and they determined that some of them were taken during recent commercial burglaries. They arrested Ellak and charged her with possession of the stolen property under $950, and financial elder abuse.

The woman is also facing a charge of unlawful possession of another’s access card, possession of burglary tools, and possession of methamphetamine. The sheriff’s office did not release Ellak’s bail information, and there’s no additional information at this time.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines elder abuse as a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm and distress to an older person.

Elder abuse takes different forms. It can be financial, physical, psychological, or sexual. It can also be a result of intentional or unintentional neglect, and if left unchecked, it can have long-term consequences.
