A woman is suing the California-based Princess Cruise Lines for negligently exposing herself and her husband to COVID-19. Susan Dorety filed the negligence lawsuit on Tuesday, April 14th, on the grounds of gross and willful negligence.

Court documents show that the woman blames the company for the death of her husband, Michael Dorety. The couple was part of those in the Princess Cruise ship to Hawaii, which recorded several cases of COVID-19.

Dorety claims that her husband contacted the virus while onboard the vessel, and was not allowed to get off and receive treatment. The two boarded the ship on February 21st, in celebration of their 40th anniversary.

The woman alleged that the owners of the ship were aware of the COVID-19 outbreak among the passengers, but chose not to disclose the situation. The couple was on board for two weeks before getting placed in quarantine off the California coast.

Dorety said that Michael’s health deteriorated while they were on the vessel. The ship’s physician treated him with Tylenol and Tamiflu, but he didn’t get better. The couple was later advised to seek medical aid outside the vessel, but at this time, it was too late to save the man.

The deceased was taken to an Oakland hospital, where he passed away a few days after without his family at his side. The Texas native also had COVID-19, but she recovered, unlike her husband.

Dorety, in the negligence lawsuit, is asking the court to grant damages against the cruise ship for negligence, gross negligence, and other unlawful acts. The company has not responded to the action but would need the services of wrongful death and personal injury attorney.
