Deputies from the sheriff’s office said that an unknown blue vehicle was heading west in the outside lane of 1100 FM 1960 when the driver struck Harrison. He fell off his bike, sustained severe injuries, and died at the scene.
The driver did not stop, and the police are actively searching for him. They have asked anyone with relevant information on the driver and the vehicle to contact the station.
A hit-and-run accident occurs when a driver strikes a pedestrian, or property belonging to another, and flees the scene without stopping. Under the Texas Transportation Code, a driver must take precautions after a crash that results in injury or property damage.
Accident reports have shown that some drivers do the opposite. The code provides that when an accident occurs, the person who caused it must return to the scene, and render aid. Failure to do so is a third-degree felony punishable with two to ten years in state prison when there’s a severe injury.
When the injury is minor, the person could get a felony conviction in county jail or up to five years in state prison, along with a $5, 000 fine.
