An accident occurred between two vehicles in the early morning hours of March 21 on US Highway 96. The accident scene was estimated to be located approximately seven miles south of Center.

Preliminary reports completed by the Texas Department of Public Safety indicated that a 2008 Pontiac car was traveling south at approximately 2:20 a.m. when it crossed the center line. The vehicle was then struck by a northbound traveling 2007 International semi-truck driven by 30-year-old Jasper Houston of Frierson, Louisiana.

The driver of the Pontiac was later identified as 28-year-old Jordan Shisler from Center. There was only one passenger in the car at the time of the accident. Police identified her as 20-year-old Jasmin Cavazos, who was also from Center.

The Shelby County Justice of the Peace was called to the scene along with medical personnel. Both occupants of the Pontiac were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident due to the injuries they sustained. The report did not say if the two were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Houston was taken by emergency medical personnel to Center Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and later released.

The reason for Shisler crossing the center line on the highway has not been determined at this time. The police have not released if they believe that impairment was a factor in this accident.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently still investigating the accident.
