The TPD and the Tucson Fire Department got a call about the crash and dispatched units to the scene. When the first responders arrived, they found Ross and Gonzales outside the wrecked vehicle, lying on the roadway.
The medics found the two unresponsive and pronounced them dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation by the TPD uncovered that the women were traveling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The latter happened as the women were about to enter the underpass, and the car collided with one of the concrete pillars. Ross and Gonzales were not wearing seat belts, which led to them getting ejected in the crash.
The TPD is not sure which of the women was driving the vehicle, but they believe that the high speed the driver was on is the primary cause of the crash. Also, the driver might have been impaired with drugs or alcohol, and the coroner will run a toxicology test to confirm.
The police believe Ross and Gonzales might have stood a chance if they had their seat belts on. They have advised drivers to belt up when driving and maintain the legal speed limit.
