The charges that Gragson plead guilty to were DUI causing death and DUI causing substantial bodily harm.
The accident occurred when Gragson, who was intoxicated, crashed his SUV into a tree. The passenger of the car, Melissa Newton was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead due to her injuries.
Three others were inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. Greg Tassie, Christie Cobbet, and Christopher Bentley all received significant injuries from the accident.
A civil case is to be tried after the criminal case has been concluded. All of the occupants in his SUV are suing him for the injuries from the accident.
Tassie, Cobbet, and the daughters of Newton are being represented by Robert Eglet. Bentley is being represented by William Kemp.
Eglet has expressed multiple concerns that Gragson’s lawyers will make sure to drag out the civil case. He is prepared to file more legal injunctions if that turns out to be the case. They are scheduled to have their first hearing for the civil matters in September 2020.
From his guilty plead on Friday, the sentencing for the criminal hearing will take place on June 12. Parties have settled on Gragson being sentenced to 15 to 25 years in prison for the criminal charges against him.
He will be eligible for parole after six years.
His entire criminal trial is said to have taken no more than 15 minutes. He listened to the judge and responded with the admission of guilt.
There will be more updates to this case, especially after criminal sentencing and the start of the civil case. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
