When officers arrived at the scene of the accident, they found that there was a man lying in the roadway. They identified the male as 36-year-old Corney L. McClendon. He was unresponsive and appeared to have suffered traumatic injuries.
Upon their arrival, the police executed immediate medical assistance to McClendon. When paramedics arrived, they took over, but pronounced him dead at 11:57 p.m.
A preliminary report has been compiled based on witness testimonies and investigation of the scene. Police believe that McClendon was stumbling and fell into the road. While he was still down on the roadway, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle left the scene of the accident.
A neighbor living close to the accident site said that they saw several emergency vehicles respond to the scene. He said that even with the implemented crosswalk sign for pedestrians, the intersection is still dangerous. People often speed down Kirby Avenue.
The sign for the crosswalk has been knocked over several times according to this neighbor. They were uneasy about the fact that someone died in the intersection only yards from their front yard.
The driver responsible for hitting McClendon in the roadway turned themselves into the Champaign Police Department a short time after the accident occurred.
At this time there have not been charges filed and they have not arrested anyone.
Further investigation is required before they can determine if the circumstances revolving around the accident warrant an arrest.
The police have not conjectured as to why McClendon stumbled into the roadway. There is a possibility that drugs and/or alcohol contributed to his stumbling into the road.
