A 19-year-old driver in a 2009 Mazda CX-9 was driving on Montpelier Avenue when they hit Veal as he was crossing the street. Reports indicate that Veal walked into the path of the Mazda.
There have been no charges filed against the driver of the Mazda.
Emergency medical services transported Veal via ambulance to The Medical Center, Navicent Health. He is currently listed as stable but did incur serious injuries in the accident.
Injuries that can commonly be associated with a vehicle and pedestrian accident are often quite serious.
Head trauma is a common injury and is often the most fatal. Anytime the brain is involved in an injury it can range from mild to extremely serious. Brain bleeds and swelling can often occur if the head hits the vehicle or the pavement hard enough. Concussions are common among head trauma.
Internal injuries in the form of internal bleeding or broken ribs can cause larger underlying injuries. Broken ribs could puncture a lung. Bleeding in the chest that is not rectified in a timely manner can be deadly.
Pelvic injuries can often happen because of the front end of the car and the hood being at the same height level. If the person is hit while they are standing it can cause severe pelvic bone injuries.
Spinal cord injuries can cause paralysis or permanent disability. It is important that a person not be moved until someone who is medically trained arrives. Movement of an injured spine in the wrong way can do more damage than the accident.
Broken bones, fractured bones, and deep lacerations are some of the most common and least fatal injuries. Although a deep laceration has the possibility of hitting a major artery, these can often be isolated and contained before bleeding out.
The accident involving Veal is still being investigated. It is possible that charges or citations will be issued once the investigation is complete.
