The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, February 17. Witness accounts and the preliminary investigation has concluded that Springer was driving the Chevy Silverado that crashed head-on into a Ford F-250 that had the other three men inside. All four men were killed upon the impact of the collision.
The Chevy Silverado was traveling south on State Highway 146 when it swerved into the inside northbound lane where the Ford was driving. The Ford was able to continue moving for a short period of time until it rolled to its side.
A Chevy Cobalt that was near the Ford when the collision happened was struck by debris. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Texas Department of Public Safety was having trouble in the identification process for the Chevy Silverado. The vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in the day. By the evening time, the authorities were able to identify Springer as the driver.
The accident investigation is still ongoing. The police are not sure as to why Springer stole the truck, to begin with. They are also unaware of why he swerved into the northbound lane. They have not determined if the presence of drugs or alcohol played a part in Springer’s erratic driving.
Reports do not indicate if any of the men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
The Dayton Police Department worked in tandem with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department, the Liberty County Constable Office, and the Liberty County Hazmat Team during this accident.
