Tuesday, February 25, 24-year-old Joshua Byrne of Hayward surrendered himself to the California Highway Patrol. The accident he turned himself in for occurred the day before on Crow Canyon Road.
12-year-old Lana Carlos and her sister were crossing with the light at Crow Canyon Road after school on Monday afternoon. A black Ford F-150 pickup truck was making a left-hand turn at the same time and hit the girls walking in the crosswalk.

The driver of the truck did not stop after hitting the girls. Video from a home surveillance system showed the entire incident.
Police officers questioning Byrne about the accident when he turned himself in said that he showed no remorse for the accident. The man would not answer any questions, nor was he willing to admit to anything.
If he had not turned himself in, the police believe it would have only been a matter of time before they caught up to him.
The tight-knit community is mourning over the death of the girl. There isn’t a person whose child didn’t know Carlos. It struck close to home that it could have been one of their children in that same situation.
The charges against Byrne, at this time, are felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. There is a possibility that more charges could be brought against him in the future.
Jail records indicated that Byrne bonded out on Tuesday night.
It did not appear that impairment was a factor in the accident.
A memorial has begun forming in the median strip of Crow Canyon Road. There has been no report as to the condition of the second girl in the accident. Right now the neighborhood is coming together to support the family of the young girl who is grieving.
