He is believed to have caused a chain reaction crash on Irvine’s 5 freeway early on August 23, 2018.
Aguilar-Calixto’s Dodge Challenger was traveling on the southbound 5 freeway when it collided with a Toyota Prius, California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera said. Other crashes subsequently occurred.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found ten vehicles and multiple injured people close to the Alton Parkway exit.
A 24-year-old Chula Vista mother died in one of the crashes while her six-month-old child received injuries. Two children, ages 10 and 11, were also among the injured.
None of the survivors sustained life-threatening injuries, according to accident reports at the time.
California Highway Patrol said Aguilar-Calixto’s car was seen speeding with its hazard lights on just before the accident.
Olivera said he was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI but was released after he posted bail.
After extensive investigations, CHP investigators found that Aguilar-Calixto was responsible for the woman’s death because he started the chain of crashes.
Orange County court records indicate that he has been charged with murder and five counts of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges on June 17.
