Motor vehicle accidents occur for otherwise avoidable reasons, and they are preventable if drivers follow safety tips and practice safe road behaviors. Motorists should pull slowly into traffic; stop, look, listen, watch out for blind spots including those in the rear-view mirrors, behind windshield pillars, and highway road signs.
At intersections, look twice in both directions before making a right-hand turn as vehicles sometimes appear out of nowhere. Look out for drivers running red lights, yellow lights, and watch out specifically for semis, as big trucks have large blind spots on their right side.
Reduce in-car distractions like changing radio stations, CDs, cell phones, or eating. Keep both hands on the steering wheel as a gust of wind, a blown tire, or a pothole can send the vehicle into another lane and cause an accident. Watch out for children and animals as they suddenly appear on the roadway, perform engine maintenance frequently, scan 12 seconds ahead, and look backward when backing out.
