The accident report disclosed that Johanningsmeier had stopped at an airport in Sullivan County before continuing to an airport in Lawrence. The two sheriff offices started searching for the missing plane, and Sheriff Clark Cottom of Sullivan requested a helicopter from the Indiana State Police.
The searchers could not use the helicopter because of the fog in the area. At about 8 a.m., a pilot reported that the plane’s wreckage was about three miles north of the Lawrence County airport. The cause of the crash remains unknown and under investigation.
The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office are working together. They will release an update as events unfold.
Air travel is one of the safest means of transportation globally, but accidents sometimes occur, and mostly ends fatally. Common causes of aircraft crashes include pilot error, mechanical defects, air traffic control negligence, and adverse weather like thunderstorms, fog, or heavy rainfall.
