The accident happened on March 2, around 3:05 p.m. on State Route 156 near Hollister. The California Highway Patrol stated that 26-year-old Russell Longworth of Modesto was driving westbound in a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. He was going about 55 miles per hour when he crossed the double-yellow centerline.
The reason for crossing the center line has still not been determined at this time.

When he crossed into the eastbound lane, he caused a head-on collision with a 41-year-old man from Los Banos. The Los Banos man was driving a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta at approximately 55 miles per hour down the highway.
The Los Banos man suffered extensive injuries due to the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Once the next of kin has been notified, the California Highway Patrol will release his identity.
Longworth was arrested at the scene of the accident prior to being taken for treatment. The California Highway Patrol believes that Longworth was under the influence at the time of the accident.
They escorted Longworth to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for treatment. As of Tuesday night, he was still being treated. They have not released any more information as to his condition.
Both of the lanes on State Route 156 had to be closed for the investigation. The road was not reopened until around 5:30 p.m.
Reports did not indicate if the driver of the Volkswagen was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
There was no information released as to the blood-alcohol content level of Longworth.
A head-on collision at a higher rate of speed like these two vehicles were driving can be fatal. The impact alone can cause severe blunt force trauma to the head, which can cause bleeding and swelling.
