A man suffered serious injuries early Friday morning when he lost control of and crashed his motorcycle on a highway near Brighton, State of Illinois authorities reported.
Forty-five-year-old Richard E. McLaughlin, of Brighton, was airlifted to a regional trauma center for treatment of major injuries after the wreck, which occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Illinois State Police. McLaughlin’s motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the wreck and no additional injuries were listed on a car accident reports available Friday evening.

McLaughlin at 5:28 a.m. Friday was driving his motorcycle southbound on Illinois 255 near mile marker 12 when he lost control of the vehicle, troopers reported. Car accident reports state that McLaughlin’s motorcycle veered off the roadway and went into the highway’s median, causing it to flip over.
Emergency medical services personnel were called to the scene, authorities reported. The wounded motorcyclist ultimately was taken via helicopter to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to car accident reports.
Authorities did not provide an updated condition report for McLaughlin Friday afternoon. It is unclear from reports released thus far whether he was wearing a helmet when he crashed the motorcycle.
The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Investigators have not yet said whether they believe factors like speed, inattentive driving or intoxication might have contributed to the wreck.
