An SUV crashed into the rear end of the truck, killing the SUV driver who was described as a man in his 30s.
Ramstead said authorities were still unsure why the box truck was stopped in the roadway, though the truck’s driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Officials believe thick fog may have prevented the SUV driver from seeing the truck in the roadway before it was too late.
The eastbound lanes of SR-101 were shut down while an investigation was conducted.
CHP provided an update that the roadway was reopened by 5:40 a.m.
