Police are still investigating the accident to try to determine the exact cause. The man was 79 years old. So, it is possible that a medical event took place which caused the man to drive off the road and into the light pole. Heart attacks and strokes are both suspected.
The man was the only person in the vehicle, and no one else was injured in the accident. Considering the fact that the man swerved across multiple lanes of traffic before striking the light pole, it is very fortunate that no one else was injured.
Following the accident, rescue workers arrived on the scene and put out the fire. However, the man was already dead and they were not able to revive him. Members of the local police department closed the road so that they could investigate the accident and try to get information about the cause of it. However, the road was reopened several hours later.
