Officials with the California Highway Patrol say a 2004 Honda Accord began driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes of the freeway before striking a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder.
Both vehicles attempted to swerve out of the way, but their right front ends collided head-on. The Pathfinder was reportedly traveling at around 60 mph and both cars were heavily damaged.
The Honda’s male driver died from their injuries at the scene. The Riverside County coroner’s office identified the victim on Sunday as 26-year-old Abraham Cortez-Rodriguez of Lake Elsinore.
The Nissan driver, a 52-year-old man from Lake Elsinore, was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center with major injuries.
A third motorist suffered minor injuries and declined hospital treatment.
CHP said neither driver was secured by a seat belt at the time of the accident. Investigators believe intoxicated driving played a role.
