Local medical examiners still have not released the names of two woman involved in two unrelated bicycle accidents, one in Sacramento and one in Lodi. Both occurred on Sunday, Feb. 2.

In the Meadowview area of Sacramento police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a woman cycling along Florin Road at about 10:30 p.m. The woman had been riding her bike in the area of 24th and Florin Road in South Sacramento when a vehicle struck her and sped away.

Authorities declared the woman dead at the scene.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a white or silver sedan. Detectives believe there are witnesses to the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sacramento Police Department at 916-264-5471 or Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357).

In a second accident, earlier in the morning, a vehicle struck a 59-year-old Lodi woman as she rode her bike in the vicinity of Tejon Street and Lower Sacramento Road.

The bicyclist pedaled north on Lower Sacramento Road, when a vehicle attempting a turn from Tejon Street struck her. The driver allegedly stated they didn’t see the victim as they pulled out from the street. The bicyclist suffered major injuries and paramedics transported her to the hospital with a broken leg.

Authorities are still investigating the incident.

In 2018, the United States lost 857 of its residents to bicycle-related traffic accidents.

There are some safety measures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that can keep you safer while out on the road:

  • Wear a properly fitting helmet.
  • Ride responsibly and obey the same traffic laws as motorists
  • Stay focused and alert.
  • Improve riding skills.
