The first two vehicles were parked on the right shoulder of the westbound lane. The investigators said that the van’s driver was pouring gasoline into the car when the Infiniti heading towards the Buffalo Drive exit drifted and struck the rear of the Mercedes.
The impact pushed the Mercedes into the van’s rear, forcing it forward into the concrete barrier wall. The NHP said the van’s driver avoided the crash and did not suffer any injury. The second vehicle driver was wearing a seatbelt, and medics transported the person to UMC Trauma for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Regalado, who drove the Infiniti, was not wearing a seatbelt, and he died while receiving treatment at UMC Trauma. The highway patrol said that they suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the occurrence, but have not confirmed it.
The accident marks the 37th fatal crash in the NHP’s Southern Command, and the 42nd fatality for 2020.
