Vanotteren at about 3 p.m. Sunday was riding his bicycle on 5 Mile Road near Murray Lake Avenue when he was hit from behind by a full-size pickup truck. Deputies have released few details about the driver, identifying him only as a 36-year-old man who resides in Lowell.
According to car accident reports, emergency medical personnel arrived on scene but were unable to prevent Vanotteren from succumbing to his wounds. Reports do not indicate whether the pickup driver was injured as well.
Authorities continue to investigate the collision. However, car accident reports note that investigators do not believe the use of drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
Deputies have not yet announced any charges or citations as a result of the crash. It’s likely that upcoming car accident reports from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department will include more details about the incident.
A statement was issued by the League of Michigan Bicyclists, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safety for bicycle enthusiasts.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Marc Allen Vanotteren, who was struck and killed by a driver on Sunday,” officials wrote on the nonprofit’s social media pages. “Rest in peace.”
Another person, a self-proclaimed distant cousin of Vanotteren, also memorialized the fallen bicyclist.
“He was a gentle giant, an extremely kind sole and a fantastic person,” the person wrote. “He will be sorely and forever missed.”
