At this time, police are trying to discern if Dias drifted over the centerline into the oncoming westbound traffic, or if other circumstances occurred to cause the accident.
The driver of the semi-tanker has been identified as 64-year-old Richard Murphy of Chico. He sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident and was treated for those. It was unclear if he was transported to the hospital for treatment or if he was treated at the scene.
Paramedics tried to save Dias, but he was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Tow trucks had to be called to the scene to remove the car and the semi-tanker from the roadway after the collision. It was determined that the tanker was full of fuel at the time of the accident. Thankfully, this did not spill or ignite during the accident. The size of the tanker was approximately 40 feet.
No charges or citations have been issued against Murphy at this time. However, the investigation into the cause of the accident and liability for the accident are still being determined.
