The GSP said that Lucas, a resident of Oglethorpe, was traveling west in a Chevy pickup truck on the highway, approaching the Butler Mill Road intersection. At the same time, Bunkley of Warner Robins was traveling south on Butler Mill Road, heading towards the intersection in a Dodge Charger.
When Lucas got to the intersection, Bunkley ran the stop sign, causing the Dodge to collide head-on with the Chevy. The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to travel into a field before overturning, with the driver of the pickup getting ejected.
Both drivers sustained extensive injuries, and the paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. Russaw, also a resident of Warner Robins, was a passenger in the Charger, and he sustained severe injuries. The authorities flew him to The Medical Center, Navicent Health, in Macon for treatment.
The GSP stated that the accident report is not yet complete as the investigation is ongoing. They have notified the next-of-kin of the deceased victims and will release updates once they have more information.
