According to the California Highway Patrol Castro-Valley, Talivaa crossed the double yellow lines and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. The man was not wearing a seatbelt, and he sustained fatal wounds.
Witnesses told investigators that Talivaa drove recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic on the county road’s windy two-lane stretch. The CHP believes that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The 26-year-old driver of the other vehicle from Walnut Creek suffered significant injuries.
The investigators said that the wounds are not life-threatening. The crash led to the closure of the affected roadway for about two and a half hours while officers cleared the scene and gathered evidence. There is no additional information.
Head-on collisions are among the leading causes of crash-related deaths in California, and other parts of the United States. Common causes of this type of accident are wrong-way driving, illegal lane change, running red lights at intersections, and failure to yield to other vehicles on the roadway.
