Preliminary investigations uncovered that the two were involved in an earlier accident. Police said they were possibly looking over the damage done to the SUV they were traveling in when Garcia-Trujillo, who was heading north, struck them.
The suspect then fled the scene without stopping to render help or calling 911. The Atlanta Police Department Accident Investigation Team used the debris from the site and witness statements to track down the driver.
The police located a Ford Explorer with front side damage near Piedmont Avenue and I-85 North. The vehicle led them to Garcia-Trujillo, whom they took into custody and charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
The police will release the identity of the victims after notifying their next-of-kin. They used the accident as a reminder for drivers to stay in their vehicle after an accident or a breakdown. The authorities warned that it is dangerous to walk on highways, as it’s one of the most dangerous places to be.
Those involved in hit-and-run crashes should contact auto accident attorneys for legal advice and representation.
