Firefighters with the Phoenix Fire Department extricated the child from the vehicle, and the woman’s relationship with the minor is unknown at this time. The police did not report any injuries from the accident. They determined that Gomez was under the influence at the time of the collision and placed her under arrest on aggravated DUI.
Driving under the influence means that a person operated a motor vehicle while intoxicated by either alcohol or an illegal chemical compound. Ordinarily, a DUI offense carries administrative penalties, but when it involves the death or severe bodily harm of another, then the offender would face criminal charges.
Depending on the severity of the victim’s injuries and the person’s conduct before and after the accident, the offender might spend time in prison. Other punishments faced by an offender include payment of a fine, suspension of his or her driving privileges, and, if ordered by the court, an alcohol rehabilitation program.
