The latter was driven by Harvey Jacobo, 23, of Porterville. The teenager sustained severe wounds, and emergency services rushed him to the hospital, where he died while receiving treatment. The police said that the driver that struck the deceased fled the scene.
Officers located the young man’s vehicle in the 1700-block of West Olive Avenue without an occupant. They later found Jacobo and took him into custody on suspicion of DUI, and booked him into the Tulare County Sheriff’s South County Detention Facility.
The police did not release any additional information about the accident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Auto-bicycle accidents are not uncommon in California, and it often ends fatally for the cyclist. The accident occurs when riders fail to stick to the curb or drivers on top speed fail to see the cyclist.
Drivers who hit bicyclists face criminal prosecution if there’s a death and proof of recklessness. A conviction means time in prison, and the offender would require the services of a bicycle accident attorney for legal advice and representation.
