19-year-old Jasmine Gomez of Baldwin Park lost her life in a fatal head-on collision during the Fourth of July celebrations. The crash happened on Saturday, July 4th, in Irwindale, California.
The California Highway Patrol said the incident occurred precisely on the Interstate 605 Freeway near Ramona Boulevard. Gomez was traveling in a silver 2003 Nissan sedan when she drove in the wrong direction for unknown reasons. The act caused her northbound car to collide with an oncoming FedEx big rig truck.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the teenager’s car wedged underneath the big rig truck. Gomez died from her injuries, while the 42-year-old driver of the bigger vehicle had complaints of pain. The CHP said he sought personal medical treatment after the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
According to the Center for Disease Control, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for US teens. Accidents involving teens are more prominent with the male gender than the female, especially those aged between 16 and 19. Teenage drivers within that age bracket are three times more likely to crash than older drivers aged 20 and above.
The common causes of teenage collisions include but are not limited to inexperience, speeding, lack of seatbelt use, alcohol, or drug usage, mostly at night and during the weekends. Teenagers with new licenses fail to recognize dangerous situations on the road, and they are more likely to make critical decision errors that lead to crashes.
