James Hanna, principal of Plymouth South High School, was charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation, and injury from mobile phone use on Saturday night.
Officers were dispatched to the scene of an accident at Mayflower Food & Spirits on South Street just after 6 p.m. where Hanna had rear-ended a Kia sedan at a red light with his Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Hanna told officers that the cause of the accident was because he was texting and driving.
Officers smelled the odor of alcohol on Hanna and noticed his blood shot eyes. Hanna admitted he had a few beers before he ran his errand. He proceeded to fail the sobriety tests given.
The driver of the Kia complained of neck and pain and was transported for medical treatment.
