A Toyota Prius struck the man, leaving him fatally injured. The driver remained at the scene and reported the accident. The occurrence led to the closure of the northbound I-880, while the CHP investigated and cleared the crash site. The inquiry is ongoing.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, auto-pedestrian accidents are growing from bad to worse due to more people choosing to walk rather than driving to their destinations. While drivers cause most accidents, pedestrians also share faults in collisions.
Therefore, the two must work together to promote safe road habits for their safety and other road users. Pedestrians should wear bright colors to enhance visibility, and use a torchlight at night.
Avoid dangerous behaviors like jaywalking, look at both sides of the road before crossing, and cross within designated crosswalks. Drivers should always stop at the latter, yield the way to pedestrians, cautiously back out of driveways and parking lots, and drive within the recommended speed limit.
