The two-vehicle smash-up took place on Atlanta Highway around 11:25 a.m. and several other people were injured.
Police said a 2007 Ford Edge driven by 49-year-old Victoria Moon turned off the highway. It was going toward the Sam’s Club parking lot and went into the path of a Dodge Journey that was heading east.
That vehicle was driven by 25-year-old Christopher Fletcher of Monroe.
Thurman was a passenger in Moon’s vehicle along with 47-year-old Michael Hanlon of Athens. All three individuals were taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for medical attention.
Meanwhile, Fletcher and his passenger, 54-year-old Eleanor Garmon, of Monroe were also transported to hospital by ambulance.
As of Thursday morning, the police said they had not filed any charges. If this changes, more information will be provided in subsequent accident reports.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
This accident was the seventh fatal crash for the year so far in Athens-Clarke County.
Thurmond’s family and the families of the other victims may be entitled to file wrongful death lawsuits.
Survivors of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for a range of monetary and intangible losses following a crash. These include lost wages and benefits and loss of companionship and care.
