Velazquez proceeded into the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Texas Avenue, trying to turn southbound when he entered the path of another vehicle that was driving southbound on Texas Avenue.
The impact of the collision was so intense that it sent Velazquez and his car into the raised median on Texas Avenue.
The other driver was in an SUV and it was sent off the road and into the display sign for Texas A&M University Campus. The name of the driver of the SUV has not been released.
The College Station Police reported that neither driver had life-threatening injuries due to the collision. They did send Velazquez to the hospital to be checked out after the accident.
Upon extraction from the car, police detected the smell of alcohol on Velazquez’s breath. While he was still being treated in the hospital, he asked one of the police officers that had accompanied him if he had killed anyone in the accident.
Velazquez was charged with driving while intoxicated. This is a Class B Misdemeanor. If his measured blood alcohol content was less than .15%, he will face a fine that could be as much as $2000, a jail stay that could be up to 180 days, and his license suspended for up to one year.
There has been no indication if Velazquez has been arrested for any prior DUI accidents. The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
