The MPD said the vehicle stopped short of going all the way through the house onto the back porch. An investigation revealed that Calixtro was unlicensed to operate a motor vehicle and placed him under arrest. They did not specify if the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
In California, a person who operates a vehicle while intoxicated and causes an accident is liable for driving under the influence. Ordinarily, a DUI charge carries a punishment of jail time, administrative driver’s license suspension, and compulsory alcohol reduction program.
However, if the accident leads to death, the person would face a vehicular manslaughter charge, which carries a penalty of four, six, or ten years imprisonment. Asides from the criminal punishments, the offender would also face a civil lawsuit for wrongful death by the victim’s family or representatives to recover damages. The latter covers medical bills, loss of income, and emotional trauma amid other things.
