All of a sudden, a 2020 Toyota truck rear-ended his multi-axle dump truck. The driver of the Toyota was 45-year-old Michael Hughes of Beaumont.
Maidley was taken from the accident site to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the accident.
Hughes was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of serious injuries that were sustained when he rear-ended the dump truck.
The accident is still under investigation. The Texas Department of Public Safety has not released any initial causes for the accident.
Traffic in the area was backed up for around 1.5 miles after the crash and while the road was shut down.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has not released the nature of either man’s injuries. Rear-end collisions can cause extensive injuries, especially when running into a truck that is a lot larger than the vehicle you are driving.
Common injuries that can occur as a result of rear-end collisions are whiplash, spinal cord injuries, injuries from the seat belt, back injuries, and even paralysis.
When an airbag deploys because of a collision, it can cause injuries on its own. Chances are, Hughes was driving a 2020 truck and with the impact, multiple airbags possibly deployed.
Fractures are the most common type of injury sustained in airbag deployment situations. Arms, wrists, the skull, rib cage, and face are all vulnerable spots for injury from an airbag. Concussions and loss of consciousness can result from airbag deployment.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is still investigating the cause of the collision. There has not been any indication that drugs or alcohol played a part.
