The man was operating the light and siren of the patrol car as he entered the intersection from southbound Maple. At the same time, 78-year-old Marcella Koester of Effingham was about to enter the intersection from the eastbound Fayette. The police said that the woman had a green light and proceeded without noticing the lights and siren.
The two vehicles collided, and the impact caused Solan’s car to spin and strike another vehicle at the intersection driven by 46-year-old Jody Hord of Effingham. According to the Illinois State Police, medics took the deputy to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital to treat minor injuries.
Koester and Hord did not sustain any wound from the collision, and the police did not issue any citation. They reiterated the importance of drivers paying attention to the road and their surroundings when in transit to prevent accidents, which sometimes have fatal consequences.
