As he lost control, the motorcycle veered away from the roadway and collided with a ditch. This happened at around 5:30 p.m. Phillips sustained critical injuries in the collision and was ejected from the motorcycle. His motorcycle was identified as a Harley Davidson.
Once the paramedics and first responders arrived on the scene of the accident, Phillips was airlifted and rushed to the HSHS St. John’s Hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, attempts to revive him failed. He succumbed to his injuries at night the same day and was pronounced dead at around 9:34 p.m.
Authorities initially withheld the identity of the victim pending notification to the next-of-kin. The county coroner’s office also conducted an autopsy to better understand the cause of death. Results of the autopsy show that Edward Phillips had suffered multiple blunt force injuries in the crash which ultimately caused his death. For this reason, his death was ruled accidental.
Illinois State Police continues to investigate the incident. Subsequent accident reports may reveal what caused Phillips to lose control of his motorcycle.
