Lopez was driving a black Nissan Sentra at an extremely high rate of speed going southbound on Interstate 5. The car veered off of the roadway to the right and went down an embankment. The car ended up coming to rest on its top on Via de San Ysidro per reports by the California Highway Patrol.
Medical personnel were called to the scene of the accident. The passenger was identified only as a 22-year-old man from San Diego. He was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital from the scene of the accident with injuries. The severity of these injuries was not disclosed.
Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident due to the severity of the injuries that he sustained as a result of the accident.
Police believe that alcohol was a factor in the accident. The only way they will be able to confirm this is by performing an autopsy on Lopez. This is generally a standard procedure in single-car accidents.
The accident investigation is ongoing.
