The police and firemen found that a black four-door Infiniti and the motorized bicycle collided. The WPD Public Information Officer Heather Cognac said a preliminary investigation showed that Carbajal was westbound on the north sidewalk of R-176.
As the victim approached the intersection with Brown Street, he suddenly tried to turn to the right, to travel north on the roadway. A witness said that the victim turned too wide and collided with the Infiniti stopped at the southbound lane for a red light.
The police said the driver of the vehicle was waiting to turn left onto Route 176. The motorist did not sustain any injury from the collision, but Carbajal was severely injured. Medics took him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
Cognac reported that the victim remains in critical condition. The investigation into the occurrence is ongoing, and there’s no additional information at this time.
Bicycle riders are usually prone to severe or fatal injuries when an accident happens. Thus, they must protect themselves with bicycle helmets, ride on the sidewalk or bicycle lane, and look out for drivers opening car doors suddenly.
