Sgt. Ryan Suhrke stated that the truck rested on a sidewalk after striking the hydrant and tree. The latter blocked the sidewalk, and the Public Works Department responded to clear the roadway. They were unable to fully clear the sidewalk at the time.
The sergeant said that as officers interviewed Sutter at the scene, they discovered alcohol impairment signs and placed him under arrest. The police could not take the man to jail immediately due to his injuries, and medics conveyed him to a hospital instead.
The accident remains under investigation, and witnesses with helpful information should contact Officer Matt Williams on the PPD listed line.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or an illegal chemical compound is a criminal offense under the California Vehicle Code. The law provides that drivers maintain a blood alcohol level below .08% when in transit.
Anyone whose blood alcohol content is at that level or above should avoid getting behind the wheel of a car. Doing this will ensure their safety, their passengers, and other people on the road.
