The Perry County Humane Society of Illinois’ most recent Facebook post indicated that their beloved volunteer driver has had no change in his status.
68-year-old Dane Caupert has spent the last ten years of his life volunteering for the shelter, rescuing animals from high-kill shelters every Tuesday, and bringing them to no-kill shelters where they find homes.

An accident near Springfield on April 14 changed all of this. Very few details of the accident have been released other than the van is totaled, and Caupert is in critical condition.
On April 17, the Perry County Humane Society reported that Caupert had head trauma, facial lacerations, and a broken right arm. Doctors had to insert a drain to relieve the pressure on his brain.
Caupert has not woken up from the accident. The doctors are currently waiting for him to come out of the coma, but for now, it is merely a waiting game.
The shelter estimates that Caupert rescued anywhere from 75 to 110 animals on each of his trips. The shelter has also set up a GoFundMe account for assistance in replacing the van so that it can continue the rescue efforts.
It is unclear if a fundraiser has been set up for Caupert and his family. Many of the people donating for the van questioned if there was going to be one set up to help the man and his family afford his medical bills at this time. The current Coronavirus crisis has made the car accident a detriment for the family. More information will be updated on this story as it becomes available.
