The Oakland Police Department stated in its press release that a 23-year-old unidentified man was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla with Martinez as his passenger. The two were heading east on the roadway when for unknown reasons, the car went off the road, drove through a railing, and ended up in a ravine.
Martinez died at the scene from the significant injuries she sustained while the young driver made it alive to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. OPD investigators believe that speed is a factor in the fatal crash, but will have conclusive evidence at the end of their investigation.
They encouraged witnesses to come forward and contact the Oakland Police Traffic Investigation Unit on the listed line. There is no additional information at this time.
