The man was eastbound on Gerald in a 1990 Jeep, and at the same time, a 2019 Honda was heading north on Portola. The police said that both vehicles collided head-on at the intersection, and the impact ejected the victim from his car. Responding medics transported him to Desert Regional Medical Center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.
Two people in the Honda identified as the driver, a 32-year-old Palm Desert woman, and the passenger, a 30-year-old Southgate man, suffered significant injuries. The paramedics conveyed the two to the local hospital for treatment.
