The Petaluma Police Department said in a press release that Dethlefsen was driving a white Honda Accord west on the highway when he suddenly veered off into the east lanes. Cacy, whom investigators learned was on his way to work, was riding his bicycle east.
The auto-bicycle collision left the victim with injuries that ended his life before the first responders arrived. The suspect went on to climb the overpass and collide head-on with a Ford F-150 truck driven by an unidentified driver. The two motorists did not suffer any injury from the second collision.
The officers at the scene determined that Dethlefsen was intoxicated with prescription drugs and arrested him on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. They remanded him at the Sonoma County Jail, and the latter’s record shows that his bail bond is $100 000.
The accident report also disclosed that by Wednesday night, the man was still in jail. There is no additional information at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
